Look up! How your posture can affect improve your confidence

When the Weather Messes With Your Mood

As we drove to school through Noah’s finest last week, I had my teenage son as my captive audience, so I seized the teaching opportunity.

Yes, he was overjoyed.

How Mood and Posture Intertwine

I started talking about how our mood can affect our posture but also posture can affect mood. I referred back to a yoga blog I wrote donkeys ago that when it rains everyone feels somewhat glummer than if it were sunshine-y, and we might think that’s only because of the grey skies and wet weather.

I think most adults can all agree that wetness isn’t necessarily always a bad thing, right? As a certified sex coach, I speak about it often 😜 💦

If you’re snug and dry in a warm car you can observe people looking downright miserable as they walk along the street getting soaked.

Naturally, we lower the chin towards the chest to prevent water running into our eyes - the eyebrows can only soak up so much moisture - and this, by mechanics, lengthens the back of the neck and creates a lil’ space for cold rainwater to seep down towards our upper back.

So our shoulders hunch up a bit causing muscular tension, giving us a bit of a stoop which has our whole vantage looking down towards our feet, not making eye contact with other people, also looking as miserable as sin.

And let’s not forget that sometimes water falling from the sky is loud - but the sound of tyres on tarmac, splashing - jarring sounds - there’s a lot of external noise going on. So the whole experience has us turning somewhat insular and a bit disconnected from the other humans we might encounter. And if you have a brolly, even more so because you can be putting a physical barrier in between.

But circling back to my earlier statement about how mood and posture are linked, you can remember that for the most part, we have conscious control over our posture - think Amy Cuddy and her Ted Talk about the power posing.

Finding Your Power Pose

Stand like Wonder Woman and sure as eggs is eggs, your mood will alter. Even just a pinch.

And since we’re on the topic of posture - it’s not just about how you show up in the world, but how you move

within it

A supple spine, open hips, and strong legs aren’t only great for confidence — they’re also game-changers in the bedroom. When you understand how your body moves and supports you, pleasure becomes a full-body experience. That’s exactly what I explore in my

Yoga for Sex course

- helping you build strength, flexibility, and connection in all the right places.

So here’s a lil’ challenge for the next time it’s pissing down - because it’s just a bitta water, right? And as Dolly Parton says,

The way I see it, if you want the rainbows, you gotta put up with a lil’ rain.

Stand taller, take up your space, make eye contact with people you walk by, lift your chin, babe - you’re beautiful.

Whatever shade of saggy y-fronts the sky, there’s always a glimmer of something lovely to notice.

Because sometimes standing tall in the storm is how you find your sparkle.

The Takeaway & Invitation

Whatever shade of saggy y-fronts the sky, there’s always a glimmer of something lovely to notice.

☔️ If you know your posture, mood, or confidence have taken a bit of a battering lately, that’s exactly the kind of shift I work on with my coaching clients, helping women stand taller in every part of life.
